The oil mill of Tourtour

 

 

This XVIIth century communal olive mill is one of the very few mills still working in the traditional manner, with water power from the spring of St Rosaire to turn the millstone and man power for the press.

The door opens on the 15th of december for 1 or 2 months, depending on the quantity of olives.

According to the quality of the olives, there is approximately 5kg of olives to get 1 liter of olive oil.
The olive oil mill of Tourtour treats 40 or 50 tons of olives per year, using traditional materials. During the period of « trituration » (the olive grinding), 2 employers work full time in the olive mill.
